🔧 The PSA 1.5 BlueHDi engines have become one of the most widespread diesel powertrains within the PSA Group since their introduction. They can be found in Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, Fiat, and Toyota vehicles. Although these engines are known for their low fuel consumption and modern design, the first generation experienced issues with the timing drive system between the camshafts.
⚙️ The engine uses a combination of a timing belt and a timing chain. While the timing belt drives the camshaft module, the camshafts themselves are connected by a short timing chain located inside the module.
🔩 The first engine versions were equipped with a 7 mm timing chain. This chain proved to be the weakest point of the entire design. Over time, chain elongation led to increased load on the tensioning system and subsequently to damage of other timing components.
⚠️ In advanced cases, this could result in:
- excessive noise from the camshaft module area,
- engine timing errors,
- camshaft damage,
- cylinder head damage,
- chain skipping or chain breakage.
Such repairs often involve high costs and extensive engine work.
✅ PSA Solution: Upgrade to an 8 mm Chain
To address this issue, PSA gradually introduced an upgraded version featuring a more robust 8 mm timing chain. However, the change involved much more than simply replacing the chain itself.
The objective was to increase the durability of the timing system and eliminate the issues associated with the original 7 mm design.
❌ Why Can't 7 mm and 8 mm Components Be Mixed?
This is one of the most common mistakes made during repairs of these engines. Many mechanics assume that the original 7 mm chain can simply be replaced with the wider 8 mm version. In reality, both systems are structurally different. The differences involve sprocket dimensions, camshafts, the camshaft module, and other related components.
🔄 Therefore, a complete kit corresponding to the specific version must always be used during repairs. Mixing 7 mm and 8 mm components is not possible and may lead to incorrect timing system operation.
🛠️ How Should Repairs Be Carried Out?
If the engine shows increased timing system noise or signs of camshaft mechanism wear, it is important to remember that the original 7 mm timing system has been superseded by the upgraded 8 mm solution, offering greater durability and a longer service life.
For this reason, a worn 7 mm chain should not be replaced with a new 7 mm chain. Instead, the engine should be converted to the complete 8 mm system. This upgrade includes not only the timing chain itself but also the associated camshaft mechanism components.
Only a complete 8 mm solution can ensure correct operation and long-term reliability of the timing system.
